Dead Pixel Test

Fills the screen with one plain colour after another. Dots that stay dark are dead pixels; dots that stay coloured are stuck pixels.

Check the screen with plain colours

The screen fills with one colour. Tap the screen or press the right arrow for the next colour, and press Esc to exit.

How it works

  1. 1Clean the screen first so dust isn't mistaken for a dead pixel.
  2. 2Press Start test. The screen fills with one colour. Tap the screen or press the right arrow for the next colour.
  3. 3On black, look for dots that light up. On white, red, green and blue, look for dots that are dark or a different colour.
  4. 4Press Esc or the Exit button to finish.

Common questions

What's the difference between a dead and a stuck pixel?

A dead pixel is always off, so it shows black on every colour. A stuck pixel is stuck on one colour (red or green, say) and shows most clearly on black. Stuck pixels sometimes recover on their own; dead pixels are usually permanent.

How many dead pixels are acceptable?

Each brand has its own policy. Many monitor makers only replace a panel once there are several dead pixels, so a single dot may not be covered by the warranty. Check the brand's warranty terms, and when buying used, go for a screen with none at all.

Why isn't it fully full-screen on my iPhone?

Safari on iPhone doesn't let web pages go full screen. The colour still covers the whole page, but the address bar may show. Turn the phone sideways or add this page to your Home Screen to check more of the screen.
